We'll be playing tonight (Wed the 24th)

Anders is stepping out of the game at this time, as he doesn't have the time to play. I may or may not be opening an extra spot in the game, and as usual if I do it will go to someone not currently in a game to "spread the love" first.

My distributor is waiting on a restock of the Core rulebook -- the ones they got last week were damaged. Blith, I should have yours soon.

So I was reading into my Gurps Book and apparently my Character does not have the ability to throw his fireball he can only "Cook It"... looks like my 3 points are going into Innate attack!

I've always taken issue with the change GURPS made about "spell throwing" -- so a Mage has to have good DX and IQ? Makes them hard to play.

I'll have to look into Innate Attack -- that is new to 4th ed. But it might solve my problem. maybe.

Both Khal and Shadrick should ahve next Wednesday, the 24th, off. So that will be the next night for the game.

To recap: after investigating several attacks by strange, wolflike cretures, the party finds itself defending the train crew against an assault by 6-8 of the cretures, standing bipedals and casting spells and shooting arrows. Though most of the attackers were able to escape, the part did manage to critically injure two of them, only for the party to discover that they have shifted into the form of elves...

Few updates:

Magic/Jon -- One of the things that GURPS has added to the game is making magic-users "attack" witht heir spells using a separate attack roll. I do not like this idea -- spells should be target seeking. However, this is how I am going to rule it: You make one roll for casting and hitting (this is the same roll). If you make your spell check, the spell is successfully cast. If you made the check modified by the distance to target (like when using a gun or toher weapon), then the spell hits the target, which gets a defense roll.

Example: Samuel wants to throw a fir3ball at a target 5 yards away, at a -3 to hit. Samuel's Fireball skillis 16. He rolls a 13 -- the spell is successfully cast and hits the target. If the roll had been 14, or the target had other combat modifiers to make it harder to hit, the spell would have missed. I now have the ability to have the fireball strike some otehr target, and possibly start a fire (yay!).

Also, high skill will translate into more damage. At level 15, each spell costs one less energy to cast. I am making this a bonus energy point when casting combat AND healing spells. What this means, essentially, is that a Fireball, which uses 1-3 energy, will get a bonus energy at level 15, 2 bonues at 20, and so forth. So Samuel can now cast a 4d fireball for three energy -- better than a pistol, not as good as a rifle. This bonus is off base skill, not modified skill.

Shad -- check the thread about Magic in this thread about the modified enchanting rules -- they may be in there. If not, I have them in my master copy at the store.

Money
This has always been an issue for me. I am not changing the costs for any items in the game. I am, however, chaning the currency exchanges. Starting money, and all book prices, are now given in coppers farthings.
10 copper pennies =1 copper farthing
10 farthings = 1 silver
10 silver = 1 gold

As such, the 1000 silver that was received is actaully only 100 silver, but is worth the 1000 farthings, and its value has not changed in game terms.

Pennies are used for simple foods -- beer or ale, bread, stews, etc. Farthings are fairly common exchange units, and silver are used for higer value items -- nights at inns, weapons and repairs, etc. Gold is not often found changing hands in the street vendors or merchants, but is used. There is a new paper system being introduced, but they are regional by kingdoms, and many prefer using coins as their value is more easily transferable to other kingdoms.

I am hoping to play-up the steampunk aspect of this game more; I feel that I have been too fantasy orientated up to this point -- which is why I am a little disappointed by what I have been running. This last adventure didn't quite do what I wanted, but it did serve as setup for what I hope will be the next series of adventures.

Also, everyone gets another 2 character points for the session.

Well, I finally found my backup. Unfortunately, it appear the disk has suffered some damage, and I may not be able to salvage the information I was looking for off the cd. I am trying, and we'll see what I come up with.

Shame.

Awesome news! I had emailed by buddy Bill this file -- and my original Cyberpunk "bible" many, many years ago -- and he still had them! So I was able to get them back, and will be revising them for the current campaign.

Can't tell you just how happy this makes me.

I may have to consider post-poning this week's event -- and not just because I was thinking I might wait to start until 7 that night...

Okay, I am considering takin a break (or, perhpas more accurately extending the current break) to retool the campaign. I have some ideas for where I want to go next, but to be honest I would rather run an organized and fun game instead of one where I am rehashing old adventures and not giving it all I should give it.

I am NOT ending the campaign. I want to be clear on this. I want to run a game -- actually, I want to run several games. But I think I need the time to bone up a little better on the GURPS rules, and really flesh out more of the Steampunk side of things. Anybody can run fantasy, but this is supposed to be MORE than fantasy. And I want to make sure I am doing it right.

I have learned a few things so far in the game, and will likely make some minor tweaks to the rules sytem (mosrly in balancing out combat magic vs. combat mundane, and how guns are more powerful than spells). I have some ideas that I need to balance. I can run a better game, and frankly my players deserve better than they have been getting.

The last reason I want to take this break is that in the next several weeks I will be getting ready for my trip in August, which means i will be devting even less time than normal to preparing for my adventures. And certain players will not be able to make all sessions.

The current hope is to take up shortly after Labor Day. The camapign might be slightly ret-conned, if necessary, but I am hoping to avoid that. i would rather make a crisp break and start a new cycle than change what has happened before.
